My Story
I'm Brooke Walker, a writer and small business owner who thinks talking about what to expect as our parents age can bring hope, comfort, and peace to anyone struggling with this reality. Each day, someone receives a call or wakes up to the realization their parents have aged in one way or another. I know. I took that call at 32, and it changed the trajectory of my life completely.
I’m now 42 and living a life I didn’t plan or expect. I thought I’d be hauling a herd of kids around in a minivan and decorating Sesame Street cakes for loud birthday parties. Instead, I’m single with no kiddos and sharing a home with my mom, Nancy, who is 75 (but I didn’t tell you that).
While I do have my own life, the fact is I spend a lot of time with older folks. I travel with them. I go to dinner with them. I run errands for and with them, and I know I’m gaining so much from them. I also know I’ll never regret spending this time with them, especially with Mom. Having lost one parent already, I know time spent with your parents is never wasted.
When I’m not writing, I’m running my small business, Happy Tracks Travel, where I help busy people plan their next getaway. I travel as much as I can (when the world isn’t on hold). I love cooking and chocolate chip cookies and places with low humidity. I also adore Boston terriers and think God created them as a reminder He loves us and wants us to be happy.
On a typical day, you can catch Mom and me at home outside Houston, Texas, drinking coffee or green tea lattes, using our fireplace whenever we can, and making dinner to the exciting sounds of Wheel of Fortune.

My Why
While searching for a home for my writing, I began noticing more people my age reaching out for support after receiving bad news about a parent or an elderly loved one. Sometimes they’re looking for advice. Sometimes they’re looking for recommendations for care facilities. And sometimes they’re just looking for a hug or a shoulder to cry on. It dawned on me I could channel my story into one place where those seekers could find some comfort in a community of experience.
Of course, I share my writings from my own experience and from a daughter’s perspective. Yours will look different, no doubt. And while you may not end up living with your parents again, you’ll hopefully gain a bit more insight into life in the elderhood, what to expect, and how to better embrace it.
